Great site! One bit of "trivia" for you however... The song "Ashokan Farewell" used by Ken Burns as the central musical theme for his amazing PBS documentary film, is not a true Civil War period song. It was written in 1982 by Jay Unger. It is a beautiful, haunting song that seems entirely fitting to be used as a theme for the saddest, bloodiest period in our nation's history - but the song is a mere 20 years old. Thanks for the wonderful resources here.

I just reviewed the "Civil War Battles" and noticed that the war in the west, Missouri specifically, doesn't seem to be addressed. Being from Kansas City, Missouri and having a Civil War ancestor that saw action near his home in the Kirksville, Missouri area prior to his participation in the Vicksburg campaign, I wonder whether or not this website is going to expand its list of battles to include the events that occurred west of the Mississippi River. Thanks.

I am grateful to have found your website. Last weekend, August 17, 2002, I attended the 140th Anniversary Reenactment of eastern Missouri's bloodiest Civil War battle, The Battle of Lone Jack. My soul was deeply stirred by the recreation of this pivotal time in our nation's history. Coming from the home town of Cole Younger (Lee's Summit) and having old, very deep roots in Bates County, (one of the counties directly impacted by Order No. 11), I am ready to become a full-blown Civil War history-buff and reenactment supporter. I have found a new passion and shall not rest until I have fulfilled this desire to embrace and support the faithful remembrance of our heritage so future generations will understand the background fabric of our beloved America. Your site will help guide me on this adventure. Thank you. God bless America.

I have just come across some materials on a really contraversial subject during the American Civil War that would make a wonderful article for the ACWD, should I ever get time to recontinue it. I miss writing for y'all, but it appears the Navy is about to extend our stay another year here. I may write on the side and submit later. Maybe I can start a backlog on articles that can continue to run online. Something I was contemplating last night. I'll be in touch. Dan

I was delighted to note the following entry in your abbreviated description of Day 3 at Gettysburg: "What has become known as Pickett's Charge might be better named Pickett, Pettigrew, and Trimble's Charge or simply Longstreet's Advance." Thank you for attempting to set the record straight. I've been crusading with little success for many years concerning the historical inaccuracy and mis-naming of the event as "Pickett's Charge." However, it is probably a lost cause since most Civil War historians and even battlefield guides at Gettysburg continue to use "Pickett's Charge." I have a personal axe to grind in this matter since two of my ancestors served with honor in the 13th North Carolina, Scales' Brigade, Pender's Division (under Maj. Gen. Isaac R. Trimble), and valiantly participated in "Longstreet's Advance" at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. Richard L. Reed Civil War Roundtable of Lakewood, Colorado

My name is Edmund Marco and it's a pleasure to sign your guest book. I work for an advertising agency in London. Our agency represents direct marketing companies that are involved in the marketing of products as seen on TV in England. Most of the infomercial products come from the U.S. but then again we export our talents as well. My brother has appeared in infomercials in the U.S. advertising various products. I think it's hilarious that English people respond so well to American products while Americans tend to respond well to sales people who have an English accent!

In reading your article "Black Confederates" ("From the Picket Line") I was disappointed that your writings contained popular "politically correct" disinformation. You state that "Many officers in the Confederate army did have a slave or two accompany them when they went off to war..." right next to a picture of Andrew and Silas Chandler. Andrew and Silas came from Palo Alto, Mississippi, served together in the 44th Mississippi Infantry, and Silas saved Andrew's life following the Battle of Chickamauga. Silas was not a slave having been emancipated before the war and went with Andrew as a free man of his own free will. Big news...Union officers also often had their personal slaves accompany them. Union officers were also authorized to keep as personal servants the "contraband" they "liberated." Further, you make the PC statement that "African Americans did indeed participate in the campaigns of the major Confederate armies but not in combatant roles." The instances reported by reliable sources which blow holes in that statement are legion, but I will offer only two and both from the Federal Official Records of the War of the Rebellion: Series I, Vol XVI Part I, pg. 805: "There were also quite a number of negroes attached to the Texas and Georgia troops, who were armed and equipped, and took part in the several engagements with my forces during the day." Series 1, Volume 15, Part 1, Pages 137-138: "Pickets were thrown out that night, and Captain Hennessy, Company E, of the Ninth Connecticut, having been sent out with his company, captured a colored rebel scout, well mounted, who had been sent out to watch our movements." There are numerous reports also from Northern newspapers, from Union soldiers, and from the mouths of the former slaves themselves ("Slave Narratives" - WPA Writer's Project). You state that "...many African Americans who may have served would have been used in local defense units or in state troops units rather than in the actual Confederate armies." While this statement is true it ignores the fact that the Confederate Army was primarily composed of "local defense units" and "state troops" and shows a fundamental misunderstanding of the structure and function of the Confederate forces. Black Confederate officers served in a commissioned status long before their Union counterparts. We would heartily recommend that before undertaking such an article more in-depth research with a more open mind should have been in order. You missed your best opportunity by obviously not visiting the web site of the 37th Texas Cavalry whose mission it is to research and document the Forgotten in Gray. We would be happy to write an article for "From the Picket Line" regarding the service of all minority Confederates and offer it for publication should you be interested in an article based strictly on historical research and documentation. "The first law of the historian is that he shall never dare utter an untruth. The second is that he shall suppress nothing that is true. Moreover, there shall be no suspicion of partiality in his writing, or of malice." - Cicero (106-43 B.C.) We simply ask that all act upon the facts of history. Your Obedient Servant, Brevet Colonel Michael Kelley, CSA Commanding, 37th Texas Cavalry (Terrell's) http://www.37thtexas.org "We are a band of brothers!" "I came here as a friend...let us stand together. Although we differ in color, we should not differ in sentiment." - LT Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, CSA, Memphis, Tennessee - July, 1875

Your site is very helpful to those who can understand the value of history. No nation can have a future if they refuse to allow history to be their guide. The men and women that gave their lives and the suffering of all that lived in that trying era produced more than just a word called future but gave us men and women of this hour that can stand beside one another in todays trials such sept 11th and any more sept elevens that may come our way. Again your site is well received by many that wishes to become strong pillers of understanding and leaders of tommorrow.

On your Gettysburg Monument sub page please consider placing the 80th New York Infantry "The Ulster Guard" in parenthesis. This was the units Federal Designation and happened to be the 20th New York State Militia since 1851 long before the war. The unit members were proud of their 20th NYSM designation and did not like being referred to as the 80th New York. Place the 80th New York Infantry in paranthesis and name it the "20th New York State Militia." A desendant.

Just found your site and it looks good! I am just starting to look on the internet for any information I can find of * Frank Aretas Haskell * who was wounded at Gettysburg and killed commanding the 36th Wisconsin at Cold Harbor. I have a rather 'fuzzy' set of 16 maps of Cold Harbor I purchased at the battlefield.

Great site! What was the underlying cause of the U.S. Civil War? I have always been interested in the problems of minorities, especially the causes. I am particularly interested in ethnic conflicts, such as in Northern Ireland and have concluded that all such conflicts have a common underlying factor whether it is in East Timor, Kosovo, Bosnia, Mindanao, Somalia, Puerto Rico, Fiji, Sri Lanka, Kashmir, Tibet, Chechnya, Israel, etc. All minority groups are experiencing the same underlying problem which has in turn resulted in the common desire for independence regardless of the geographic location or culture of these minority groups. I have created a web page in which I express my belief as to what this underlying cause is. Please check it out. You may find it interesting. The belief in natural selection and an open mind would be helpful. Thanks.

Hi! First of all, thanks for a great site. Keep up the good work! I am interested in The American Civil War, and have been that since I was 10 years old playing with my toy soldiers. I have also read a lot about the war, and wrote an essay about it in ground school. Now I am interested in coming in contact with somebody who can send me some stuff about the war, form books to other written material. I am also going to set up a miniature battle, but have one big problem. Here in Norway it is not possible to get hold of what I need, so therefore I hope it is a helpfull person who reads this, and who is able to help me.I will be most greatfull. Here is what I have in mind: Toy soldiers about 6 cm high which are possible to devide into head, upper body and feet.In adittion any weapon the have, must be possible to remove from them. I need about 150 infantry form both the U.S.A and the C.S.A. I need about 100 cavalry form both the U.S.A. and the C.S.A. I need 100 cowboys and 150 indians, and I also need 200 rurales(not exactly civil war related, but to complete my work, I need those too).I also need horse wagons and canons. So my question is, do anybody know where I can get this, and perhaps give me a hint, and even send me a catalogue.I will be most greatfull! Sincerely Yours Jens Kristian Kvam Brøsetveien 156 7048 Trondheim Norway

We have been interested in Civil War for a long time, especially my husband. Every time we go on vacation, we have to go to a civil war battle field. We have been to Shiloh twice, Vicksburg twice Ft Sumter once and a few others. We have really enjoyed them, especially the re-enactments. We have also been to the forts; such as Ft Morgan, Ft Gaines and a few others. My husband also has the entire collection of Lee Takes Command that was put out by Times Life Magazines. Also other civil war books. We really enjoy the museums & etc. Keep up the GREAT WORK in keeping that history alive. It's almost like being there and going through what those guys did. I wish there was a time machine as to where we could go back in that era. Hopefully one day we can visit other civil war museums. I even have a civil war game downloaded into my computer, that's almost like being there. We never know some of our ancestors may have been in that war. Again keep up the great work in keeping that history alive, that war shows me that they went through alot. And my husband pretty well keeps up with that type of information on what went on during that time. He can tell you just about anything you want to know.

Great site! Lots of good info you have on here, I commend you on all of your hard work. I checked out your pictures of the monuments at Gettysburg. Good job, but I did notice a lot of the captions are wrong. I'd be happy to offer my assistance with the captions if you'd like me to help you with them. I'm quite familiar with the monuments at Gettysburg, having studied them for over 10 years. I have a complete collection of all the monuments at Gettysburg if you'd like to use some of my pictures, I'd be happy to share some of them with you. It's taken me 10 years to get pictures of all of the monuments there! Please let me know if I can be of any assistance with this, I'd be glad to lend a hand! Surviving Rebels returned fire and charged the Union line. Desperate hand-to-hand fighting ensued as the Union line was penetrated, but there were not enough Confederates left after the charge to hold the line. The Confederates' only choice was to surrender or to go back across the mile of open ground.

I am working on a new book that will review the reactions of Europeans who were in America during the Civil War (as immigrants, foreign officers, journalists, or visitors) to major Civil War issues (secession, slavery, emancipation, and the election and reelection of Abraham Lincoln). I would be very glad to hear by E-mail from anyone who has a letter, diary, or memoir showing the reactions to such issues of any European immigrant or visitor or the reason why an immigrant enlisted in the Union or Confederate army. The new book (as yet untitled) will complement my recent book on the international dimensions of the Civil War, "One War at a Time." Author interviews are on two websites: Abraham Lincoln Online -- http://www.netins.net/showcase/creative/lincoln/books/mahin.htm -- and Civil War Book News -- http://www.cw-book-news.com/q-a/mahin-qa.html. My heart broke when I went on line this year and could not find a CW I visited last year. After a lot of legwork, I ran into some of last year's inhabitants and they directed me to you. It's a great site. Once in a while, we digress but on the whole the discussions are well thought out and organized. It is a pleasure to be a part of this team. I am glad that so many from the old chat room found this one, Henry and Elly, you have done a great job with the whole site, but I will admit to being partial to the chat room most of all. It gets my juices flowing like last weeks discussion of Hood going to the right at Gettysburg. I will be back for more!!

This is "BY FAR" the best civil war site I have located on the internet. I am retired from the US Army, a newspaper editor, Historian, and novelist. My latest novel is about the Civil War Battle of Brice's Crossroads. It is titled "Fame's Eternal Camping Ground" and pits Nathan Bedford Forrest (The Wizard of the Saddle) against Benjamin Grierson (The Horse Soldier). It has received 7 five star ratings so far. Remember to appreciate all the hard work that gets done here in the ole camp site... Henry and his missus can only feed so many artillery horses and brew only so much coffee so all who march into "camp" don't be afraid to share what ya has outta yer knap/forage bags..This camp is a blessing and has brought many a good soul in from the rifle pits to share lore and legends with all sits about the fire... this camp is whats ya makes of it so make the most of it.... those who wear gray and butternut and swig a bit out o' the jug or those who thump their chest while wearin the Union blue.. be true to each other and be kind to all 'cause in the end we is all winners and hopes to be pards for life! Thank you for welcoming the refugees from Shotgun's chatline. I like your CW info. I was a history major in college 25 years ago, and I still need help remembering details. I like your CW battles, time line and leaders articles. For a quick reference, I can look at the time line by date, and the leaders and battles by name. The Gettysburg articles help since I portray a missionary who volunteered at the Battle of Gettysburg. Again, thank you very much.

Henry and Elly I'm the other half of Bootneck and KyReb. I see Larry beat me to the post again. That must be the Kentucky racehorse in him. As a CW fanatic I enjoy your site also. Once again I must thank you for the award. Our site started with an e-mail from Larry about Harry Fitzallen and has just snowballed. I hope we'll meet in the chatroom one day. All the best from the Highlands Allan (Bootneck) Mitchell

You have an interesting site about the Civil War. It is good for the children who would like to learn about the Civil War. Most children need to learn a little bit about the war, it's good for you to have this site on the interent. Sincerely, Shannon Terry

I love your website, especially the photo and write-up of the 20th Conn. at Gettysburg. My ancestor, Pvt. Geo. Elisha Tucker, fought with them in Co. E and I haven't been to Gettysburg to see the battleground. This is the next best thing. Thanks so much for all your work.

I am a Civil War fanatic. I find it fascinating how the men so willing gave the lives so bravely in a fight to save what they believed in. I don't know if there ever has been such a huge display of untainted bravery as in the Battle of Gettysburg. I have always wanted to visit the memorials and your site gave me a little glimpse of my wish. I absolutely loved your site. I read all the biographies and battles. I don't know what to say other than this is a great site devoted to a great cause.

Henry & Elly, I have visited your site a few times today. It has a lot of valuable information on the Civil War monuments, cooking, music, battles, timelines, and pictures. It has a great educational and historical aspect for our young scholars. You have the great leaders, causes of the war and a chat room where civil war historians can meet for their discussions of the war. The Gettysburg picture section is great. I appreciate all the effort and hard work that you have put into building this into a success of the future. I have already linked you on my Civil War Home Page. If you have a small banner that you would like me to display, I would be proud to place it on one of my banner pages. Please come by my site when you get a chance. Sign the guest book to let me know that you were by. Right now I am tied up with my grandson and Cancer Awareness. I just built him a web site. Thanks for letting me drop by. Keep up the great work, and God Bless You. Charles
