I could not agree more, except for one part :)
The two party system was well entrnched long before the wbts. Just the names changed. The Republicans just replaced the "other" second party. It has been that way since the federalist party beat the Whigs in our first election.

All Civil War Buffs:

Good morning from the battlefield country of Northern Virginia. Well, the polls opened here at 0600 hrs and I was in line at 0550. I keep hearing on the radio "Everybody should get out and vote!" As in many things in life, I guess I am going to have to disagree with that. If you are going to vote just because someone tells you that you should and you have not even looked at the issues that are going to be decided today, then for my sake stay home and watch the results on TV. I don't want a vote, spawned of ignorance, to cancel my well informed and studied one. Just a thought.
Here's a little something, especially for the younger ones amongst us. As many of you know, the two party system of government that we have today basically grew out of the Civil War with the election of Lincoln, a member of the newly formed Republication Party. All of you have heard that the "Republican Party" is the party of Lincoln and that is true as far as it goes. However, what you may not know is that the Republican party then would have been called the "liberal" party by today's standards and the Democrats would have been called the "conservatives". Interesting turnabout don't you think. I use that example to emphasize that things change over the years and when studying the "rightness" or "wrongness" of the war, the causes of the war, the actions in the war, and even some of the statements made during the war, one should examine them in the context of the time(s) they occurred in, not by today's standards. Standards change over the years. Some for the better, some for the worse. That's why it is very important when cast your ballot today you are well informed on the issues, whichever side you may be supporting, because, with your ballot, you helping to determine the standards by which this country would be governed for the next several years.

You folks take care now ya hear and I'll see ya in the Chat Room!

I am, very respectfully, your obedient servant,
Dick (a.k.a. Shotgun)
