Subject: The word 'contraband'

Message Detail:
My first person impression is of a CW missionary who teaches ex-slaves in her spare time. The word, "contraband," meant the ex-slaves who worked for the Union army. This is only a guess on my part, but is the word, contraband, offensive? Usually the word applies to objects. When I reenact and tell people of my activites, should I use this word? I want to use the right phrases, yet I do not want to use mean words.
