Subject: Britishers in the Confederate Navy

Message Detail:
OK, lets put up a query to see if we can get things going:-) Its always said that a large percentage of the ordinary seamen on raiders with a Liverpool (England) connection such as "Alabama" and "Shenandoah" were recruited here on Merseyside by various means -drink and promises of booty popularly being major ones. Indeed the large number of local men in her crew was supposedly one of the reasons why "Shenadoah" surrendered in Liverpool after the end of the war. I suspect a lot were in fact transient seamen temporarily without a ship who were recruited in the port, but I haven't come across any crew lists which might possibly (though probably not) make identification possible. Anyone know any more?

regards

John
