Henry and Elly.....congratulations on your new sites.
Just a word about Ironclads.......these vessels, were not the sleek trim and efficeient vessels of today. They tended to be somewhat blockish, and lacking in draw due to the depth of the rivers. They were also rather slow-again by todays standards.
The true wonder of the river wars-IMHO- was that both sides transformed naval warfare. The French had been experimenting with what were effectively armored mortar rafts in the Crimean war,and the Brit's seeing the French invention, went on to develop a full sized ship, the French in turn doing likewise. But the American Civil War on the rivers, led to remarkable inventions in naval warfare, and ultimately-on the Union side-was an effective weapon in helping to win the war.
