Just a thought.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that Dan Butterfield (Union) "invented" TAPS. Although I don't think it was called TAPS then. I think the beginning of what we know as TAPS was a signal to notify the unit Butterfield commanded that the next orders blown, were for that unit. If I'm mistaken someone please let me know.
Thanks Bill, I wasn't sure about that. That's why I used the word 'believe'. I did get this erroneous information from a teacher back in High School. Maybe I should walk back over to the school, since I live across from it, and personally thank them. Oh well, on a serious note I don't think it is correct for "Taps" to be played since we know it was of Union origin. An outdated Encyclopedia (1950's)I read stated that "Taps" is used in camp to signal the end of day. Nothing about what it's used for now. I'm going to do some more research on this. It's starting to eat me now.
