Was eager to see Longstreet's monument during my visit earlier this month. How disappointing, after viewing the large pedestal mounts of all the major Union generals and the R.E. Lee VA monument, to see Lee's 'old warhorse' groveling on the ground in the woods along Confederate Ave. He deserved better.
I had just the opposite impression. After seeing dozens of Generals on pedestals, I thought that the Longstreet Monument stood out from the others and probably drew more attention than it otherwise would have. The detail in the statue made me think that this was no haphazard project. Course, Longstreet probably would not have like it, for the reasons you give.
