As I heard the story, (which is likely just made up) "hoosier" dates to Indiana's frontier days when people were pretty well spread out. The story holds the in shouting out "who's there?" the word "hoosier" emerged.

Doesn't make any sense? No kidding. But hey, most people pronounce washington as "warshington" here. I'll just "warsh" my hands of the whole thing!
