Subject: RE: Have you walked the gorge?

Message Detail:
It is nearly time for my annual visit to the battlefield, and I'm working on plans for the trip. I was considering walking down Slyder lane to near the house, and then cutting along the base of BRT to the Devil's Den via the gorge. Has anyone done this? I've toured the area, but never gotten off of the pathways. Any advice appreciated.

Well, I have walked those areas, but not in that order. I have gone to the Slyder farm on a path from S. Confedrate Ave. by BRT. I've walked the gorge, which is very tricky, I tripped and hurt my ankle one year!! But, it was worth it, to walk where they fought in 1863! I have walked behind the gorge on a path that was the old electric trolley path.
Have fun!

Well I hope this isn't too ignorant of a question...but what is the gorge? Where is it, exactly? And what signifigance did it have in the battle?

Thank you for your answers.

Hi, Newyawk!
Well, I didn't find out what 'the gorge' was myself until about three years ago when I read it in a book on Devil's Den. The gorge is the huge rocks/bolders south of the 'slaughter pen' near Devil's Den. I don't recall exactly what southern regiments went through those boulders..possibly some of Benning's men? I wanted to go there to get a 'feel' for what they went through when attacking. Some rather large boulders that run through Plum Run.
