Subject: RE: Numbers

Message Detail:
Last night I was doing some reading on PA cavalry regiments. Once again I was surprises by the numbers in some regiments. For example the 2nd PA cav during it's existance had 2095 on it's rolls. The 17th PA cav had 1907. The more I research I do on PA regiments, the story of regiments being bled down just doesn't work. They may have hit low points, but there was a steady stream of recruits coming in.

If you study the Sixth PA Cav. "Rush's Lancers" you'll find that when they started they numbered about 1200, and when they were mustered out of service they were down to 48 enlisted men and officers. For more information on the "Lancer's" go to http://www.rushslancers.com This is maintained by Eric Wittenberg a noted Civil War historian who has written several books on cavalry and on the battle of Gettysburg. But why am I telling you this, most of you have talked to him at Gettysburg.
