Ed,

Wilder's men were armed with Spencer rifles, and mounted on horses. Essentially, they were mounted infantry. They used their horses to move from place to place, dismounted and fought using infantry tactics.

They were extremely effective.

Try a book called "Lightning at the Bridge" and another called "Sherman's Horsemen" for lots of information.

I hope that helps.

Eric Wittenberg
Does anyone have or know where i can find info on this formation & it's leader Jonh T Wilder. I am also looking for general info on so called mounted infantry. I wonder how they were mounted & were they rifle not carbine armed.

Thanks
