A memorial of bronze and granaite, it's base included the Vermont state seal and tributes to the 1st Vermont Brigade, 2nd Vermont Brigade, 1st Vermont Cavalry, and Vermont Sharpshooters.
Towering 50 feet high, atop the monument's ornate column is commander of the second brigade, General George Stannard. You will notice that on this portrait statue Stannard is missing his right arm. However, while the general did indeed lose this limb, it was actually not until after the battle of Gettysburg that he sustained the loss.
