Although it sits on Pennsylvania soil, this monument says Texas in a big way. It was carved from Texas' own red granite and prominently displays the state's "Lone Star" symbol. Lest you wonder why a unit as celebrated as the Texas brigade has been honored here with such a modest monument...keep in mind Texas' approach to commemorating its men in battle. The state erected memorials, not just here, but at 11 other Civil War battle sites where Texas blood was shed. The identical monuments represent a commitment by the state of Texas to honor its soldiers without regard to the role of the battle in the history of the Civil War.
